All the best to the newbies in PT sessions who start with me today, November 1st, 2018!
First of all, BRAVOOOO! It is a hard decision to start with a Fitness Professional, it usually takes time to decide if we really need one.
Ask yourself these questions, and if you answer NO to at least one of them, your decision about hiring a PT is the right one.
Regardless of your fitness level, NO will be your answer to some of the following questions. The more advanced you are, the “NO” will be the answer at the end of the questions, but still will have some NO as an answer.
- Do I feel confident going to the gym and start training by myself?
- Do I know with which exercise to start? Should I do a warm up? Cool-down? How much? Which exercises?
- Do I know which kind of exercises to start doing at the beginning and how to increase the intensity to see results?
- Am I doing the exercise with the proper technique or am I risking an injury?
- Do I keep myself motivated to keep going?
- Do I know which specific exercises or activities will help me improve specific skills, like strength, mobility, flexibility, etc?
You might start training and thinking you are doing everything right because you are getting stronger and feel fitter and even creating a lean body with time BUT you still might be doing some exercises wrong. Why is that, you ask? Basically, because you either lack the knowledge of a certified Fitness Professional or you never had a PT who was dedicated just to you. In that case, you might get injured at some point during your fitness activity.
Once I implemented the fitness habit as a routine on a weekly basis, I realized how little I knew about fitness! I thought I was doing great by myself just because I was fitter and stronger than most people and more ripped and leaner than ever, too! Until, one day, I got injured in my neck from doing an exercise after skipping the warm up… Rookie mistake! The first thing you learn in the university once you go for the PT certification is, “NEVER SKIP THE WARM UP”. So, did I know everything about fitness despite that I was feeling good physically and mentally? Of course not, the two are not connected and that is what people should realize.
I am a Personal Trainer myself and the thing is, no matter how much experience I have, I will never stop learning, there will always be someone with more knowledge in some specific fitness area or someone who tried something that I didn’t do with a client and has the experience to predict the consequences. You can always learn and be persistent to gain more experience and better know the process cycle in a client. You can always still learn.
Once you are aware of the importance of someone having your back who is willing to help you personally and give you tailored tips, you will feel more comfortable with that person. Another thing is, you should choose a PT you think you might feel comfortable with. Some PT’s are more relaxed than others, some are more assertive, more perfectionist, etc. That is why you should be open to him/her as you chose the PT and be open to change. The PT is not there to judge you or make you feel bad. A good PT will encourage you to give your best in each session, improve yourself at the same time and learn and better yourself, not just in the gym but also on a personal level. So take him/her as your fitness psychologist, who is there to help you in the gym and make you feel better each day. Of course, at the end of the day, the one who needs to give their best on a
daily basis when your PT is not beside you is you, so… 3, 2, 1, Gooooo!!!
Bearing in mind all I said so far, I would affirm EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A PERSONAL TRAINER ONCE IN THEIR LIVES to have the experience of having someone they can count on at the start of their fitness journey. You can always change your PT if you do not feel comfortable with your current one or enrich your knowledge by watching videos or webinars online, downloading e-books or sharing experiences with buddies. There’s no end to the possibilities if you want!
